The True Story Behind the Character “Erica” in the Book
The character “Erica” in my book, "Jefferson Avenue & Chene" is completely fictional — a made-up version that’s nothing like the real woman who inspired her. These chapters were just fake stories, but this reflection is for the real Erica — a woman who deserves her truth to be told.
If I could go back in time and do things differently, I would have treated her with the respect she absolutely deserved. I would’ve shut out the noise from my so-called friends and trusted my own heart. But back in the late ’80s, the standard of beauty was narrow and harsh. Big-boned, curvaceous women weren’t the ones who got attention. You had to be slim, petite, with a tiny waist — that “model type” look that magazines and music videos pushed as the ideal.
Now, times have changed. Today, it’s the full-figured, bodacious, confident women who are finally being celebrated — the kind of beauty Erica had all along.
The real Erica was beautiful inside and out. She was hardworking, selfless, kind-hearted, and deeply spiritual. Her energy was magnetic — soft yet strong, and incredibly sincere. She would’ve given me the world without hesitation. And in return, I gave her pain.
Looking back, I know I failed her. I let the opinions of others cloud my judgment, and I turned my back on someone who truly cared for me. I did her wrong. And that’s something I carry with me to this day — a regret that still speaks loud.
This space is for her. For the truth. For the woman I should’ve loved better.
Erica, I truly am sorry. I was young and didn't know better. In the 80's I was in the fast lane and partying was all I ever thought about back in those days.
And honestly...I also wish the ending of this book had turned out that way.
Thanks again for being one of the inspirational characters in this book.
